a tagged post

Beautiful and funny Lauren, over at Tippee Canoe, tagged me in a post today where she asked 11 questions for me to answer, then pass on the fun!

So how does it work? Well I get to answer her questions for me, and then I get to tag some of you and ask my own questions!

The Rules:
*Post these rules
*Answer the 11 questions that the tagger posted for you
*Create 11 questions of your own to ask the people that you're about to tag
*Tag people and link them with your post (and let them know they've been tagged!)
the Questions for me:
1. Why did you first get involved in the blogging world?
Well, I had two little blogging birdies chirping in my ear (Emily and Alivia) about blogging- and thought I would give it a try. Not going to lie, I was pretty self conscious about it at first...but now I love it and love the wonderful people that have come into my life because of it!
2. Who inspires you most in your life?
To be honest I'm not sure if there is ONE person. I have many. My friends, family and Jeff all inspire me every single day!
3. How would you describe your personal style?
I would say....pretty casual with a side of funky. I love big bold jewelery and colors and other random stuff. If it is comfortable, I'll wear it. If some of my friends think it is weird, I'll wear it. But apparently I am very concerned about looking like a hippie. Ask Em. Not sure why since I adore the hippie boho look!
4. What is your personal favourite blog post you've written?
Hmmm...I don't know!? When Jeff's mother was sick I wrote a lot about what I was feeling. That is probably the most honest I've been on here. But I also like the posts where I talk about whatever it is I have done to embaress myself lately. I think it is good to show the silly side as well.
5. What is your guilty pleasure?
Anything chocolate and salty. YUM.
6. What is your favourite spring must have?
Neon coral- I think bright bursts of neon with an outfit that is otherwise subtle is phenomenal.
7. What cheers you up on a really crappy day?
A good run, loud music, flowers, Jeff-- in no particular order.
8. What is your dream job?
Being a country music singer! Or, juvenile defense attorney! Or owning my own bookstore/coffee shop!
9. What is your real job?
Assistant director of business development at a financial advisement firm. Not. even. close.
10. Who is your celebrity crush?
John Krasinski from The Office. YUM.

11. Which blog did you very first follow?
I belize I first followed Alivia's blog. Or Em's? Not sure.

Your turn!!!(no pressure though if you don't wanna do it!) (and btw friends, if you haven't checked out the blogs I'm tagging- you should. These ladies are amazing and beautiful and so so so sweet!)

3. What would you do if you had a million dollars?
4. What would life be like if you had wings?
5. What is something that makes you happy?
6. What is your favorite item of clothing?
7. Cats or dogs?
8. What is the one thing you’d most like to change about the world?
9. What one thing have you not done that you really want to do?

Fifty Shades of Grey-- Book Review

What UP for my first book review!!

Fifty Shades of Grey
By: EL James
Genre: Fiction/Erotica/Mommy Porn
Pages: 356
My Rating:
out of:

Synopsis (via Good Reads):

When literature student Anastasia Steele is drafted to interview the successful young entrepreneur Christian Grey for her campus magazine, she finds him attractive, enigmatic and intimidating. Convinced their meeting went badly, she tries to put Grey out of her mind - until he happens to turn up at the out-of-town hardware store where she works part-time.

The unworldly, innocent Ana is shocked to realize she wants this man, and when he warns her to keep her distance it only makes her more desperate to get close to him. Unable to resist Ana’s quiet beauty, wit, and independent spirit, Grey admits he wants her - but on his own terms.

Shocked yet thrilled by Grey's singular erotic tastes, Ana hesitates. For all the trappings of success – his multinational businesses, his vast wealth, his loving adoptive family – Grey is man tormented by demons and consumed by the need to control. When the couple embarks on a passionate, physical and daring affair, Ana learns more about her own dark desires, as well as the Christian Grey hidden away from public scrutiny.

Can their relationship transcend physical passion? Will Ana find it in herself to submit to the self-indulgent Master? And if she does, will she still love what she finds?

Erotic, amusing, and deeply moving, the Fifty Shades Trilogy is a tale that will obsess you, possess you, and stay with you forever.

My Thoughts:

I might not even need to write anything since the picture above sums up my thoughts fairly well.

First off, I need to start by saying for some reason (that I still haven't figured out)- I thought this book had vampires in it. This isn't what enticed me to read the book...but for about the first 50 pages, I kept waiting for a Mr. Grey to reveal himself as a vampire. Sorry to ruin this for you, but he does not. Because, well...he isn't a vampire. Maybe because someone said this is like the adult Twilight, I just assumed vampires were involved? Anyway, moving on from lack of vampire....I was curious about the book since it rocketed to the top of the NYT Best Seller list (I now know that you don't have to be a quality book to do that..) and wanted something light/interesting to read. Did I find that? Light reading? Yes. Interesting? No.

This book is terrible. OH MY GOD is it awful. The writing is so poor, so terrible, that I was literally cracking up sometimes. It is badly written porn (not like I'm sure what well written porn is...but go with me here...).

The main character, Ana Steele is annoying, obnoxious and dumb as shit. Senior in college about to graduate, meets a millionaire (who is only 27...real realistic) who is so attractive she can't stand it, and is shocked when she finds out he is interested in her. By the way, the writer tries to make us believe that he is the first man she has ever really been interested in. Pfffft....right. The millionaire man, Christian Grey, is such an asshole. His personality flickers and changes-- in what the author wants us to believe is a sexy way, but just would have made me peace out so fast...he is arrogant, pompous and not the least bit warm.

Their "relationship" isn't the least bit believable. They meet. They go out for coffee. He tells her he is no good. She cries. He mails her expensive books. She gets wasted at a bar, calls him and tells him she doesn't want his books. Then, OBVIOUSLY he gets all pissed that she is drunk, goes to the bar where she is and takes her home with him. Right. Oh and the next morning she wakes up and his "assistant/security" guy has bought her all new clothes and underwear since she puked on her own stuff. They kiss. THEN later, they go on a first date.

That is when she discovers he is a ginormous freak- he makes her sign a nondisclosure agreement, they have sex and then he tells her that he is into dominatrix stuff. He has a freakin' pain room in his mansion and he wants her to be his submissive. Grey tells Ana some story about how when he was 15 his mother's friend seduced him and made him her submissive and now these are the only type of relationships he has. The rest of the book is this: Ana trying to get him to have a real relationship and yet doing what he wants, sex, sex and more sex.

I think the most annoying thing for me was that he is a huge jerk and yet because he is SO good in bed, she falls in love with him? WTF? I am no prude, but I don't think that great sex would ever be something that would make me abandon all my morals and values or self worth...

This book is like a glorification of emotional (and physical) domestic violence. He tries to control everything she does, from when and what she eats, drinks, wears, drives, when she exercises...you name it, he tries to control it. I mean, the douche lord buys her a laptop and a blackberry so he can be in contact with her whenever he wants.  Every time Ana gets a little bit smart and is like "wait...I should be able to eat what I want" or "it ISN'T normal for him to get so angry when I don't answer an email he tells me I'm going to be punished...", she immediately gets stupid again and has sex with him and forgets everything. Oh she cries a lot too. and you don't feel bad for her when she does, you just want to slap her.

I think it is one thing to want to be funky in the bedroom but a totally different story to let that dictate your entire relationship. If she rolls her eyes at him then later, when they are at his house, he'll "punish" her, which is essentially beating her. Except he isn't allowed to leave any permanent marks on her. So basically he spanks her or whips her butt with a belt. Every move she makes is somehow tied to how it impacts him and how he is going to react. I guess maybe I do feel badly for her since she is so pathetic. All of his sketchy stuff does weird her out-- and yet she goes along with it because she loves him (??) -- how and why is never made clear. Why? He is hardly nice to her. He is patronizing. Closed off. Unavailable. Controlling. Manipulative. Ahh...true love.

This is a trilogy and I have zero interest in reading the remaining books. It made me sick to read a book written by a woman that glorified this kind of abusive relationship and tries to make you like and understand the abuser.  At one point Ana hits the nail on the head -- thinking to herself that he was victimized and molested as an adolescent by an older woman (hell, the guy has burn marks on him from his days as a submissive)-- but when she tries to bring it up to him, he brushes her off saying it wasn't abuse and it helped him. And, instead of telling him that she isn't going to let the cycle continue or perpetuate his childhood abuse by going along with his whole dominate/submissive thing...she does.

Blech...I can't even write about this anymore.

Has anyone else read it? I'd love to hear some more opinions. BUT if you haven't read it and are thinking of doing so, Be WARNED. Only read it if you want to read a poorly written erotic novel with weak characters and monotonous repetitive sex scenes. and no vampires.

This is my cat.

This is my cat on drugs*.

Any questions?

etsy monday- Maine style

hey y'all
Hope you guys had fabulous weekends- mine was pretty laid back and I loved it. We went and saw the Hunger Games yesterday- but I'm not going to get into how I feel about that right now.  All I'm going to say is, I love me some Jennifer Lawrence.
Also I'm considering doing book reviews on here-- what do you guys think? Is that something you'd be interested in? I read such a WIDE range of books- from classic to crap to YA-- and love spouting my opinions (as you know) so thought maybe I'd try it out! Plus, I'm in a book club so sometimes I read books I wouldn't even think of reading-- like how last week at book club the book we were supposed to read was "the Great Gatsby" but instead I read "Great Expectations" because I remembered the book wrong....awkward!

Anyway- E.M. time! This week, these are things I'm loving from my fellow Mainers:

I'm a sucker for squirrel art!
hot pink paper straws
pretty bra that looks super comfy too
pretty locket
latitude and longitude ring
linen lamp shade

what i'm loving lately

since I made such a big deal of appreciating the little things a few posts ago, I thought that today (tonight?) I'd share what I'm loving lately to offset my day of not feeling so well, cleaning up dog puke and spending the day inside at work on an 80 degree March day. I am a firm believer that when  you feel a little blue, to reach out and grasp on tightly to the best things in your life- the little and the big.

Lately I love:

- planning my garden! I am so excited to have a raised bed and plant so many delicious things!
-the past few days of random summer heat in March in Maine. 80 degrees? Two days in a row?
-Go Berry frozen yogurt.
-Cali's new haircut.
-sleeping with the windows open and hearing the peepers at night.
-listening to music while I take a shower.
-anything they make at Maine Squeeze.
-Fage yogurt.
-the fact that this season of The Bachelor is finally OVER and I can stop watching.
-zombies. The Walking Dead is so so so good.
-that tulips are in season and showing up everywhere!
-pops of neon on my nail or jewelry.
-the beginning stages of planning our wedding!
-my friends and their cute prego bellies
-my friends that are always always there for me no matter what.
-bar sculpt!
-the way the air is starting to get that sweet salty smell of summer.
-when Jeff emails me and writes "oh geese" when he really means to write "oh jeez".
-all the bits of life.

Free Cat.

Remember that cat I wrote about?
Well who wants her?

She is quirky, yes?
And I can accept that.
What I cannot accept is her grossness.
Like her inability to urinate like a normal cat. Capo must stick her butt against something when she pees, the wall of her little box for example...but I thought it was just because the wall was there and if we took it away she would pee normal.

So we took an old cabinet, cut a hole in the wall and made a neat litter box container thingy.  Gross cat stuff hidden? Check! Less litter on the floor? Check! Cat pee contained to litter box? Uncheck.

We discovered in the sickest way possible that without a wall to put her furry cat ass against when she pees, that Capo just pees over the side of the box. And then said piss soaks into the wood of the cabinet. And then soaks through. To the floor. And lucky me, I came home to this tonight. A nice wooden cabinet ruined by Capo, 1.5hours of cleaning the floors with bleach and being totally sicked out.

So, who wants a cat?

house brights

time to spruce things up a bit- pops of color around the house can make a HUGE difference. A colorful lamp, vibrant throw pillows and kitchenware that isn't just practical but pretty, is the BEST easy way to make things feel fresh and new around your abode.

Recently I've stumbled across a few hilarious blogs/websites.
A friend sent me www.mycatisadick.com after I complained non-stop about my cat puking everywhere.
It is so funny and so accurate and so gross.

and then I found WTForever21.

and I love it.

and it loves me back- well not really, but it certainly makes me laugh.

Don't get me wrong, I shop at Forever21 and find some great things- but more often than not I laugh at all the crap/terrible fashion Forever21 tries to sell.

this made me almost spit out my coffee:
Thank you WTForever21. Thank you.

are you guys getting sick of me saying how excited I am for spring? I know I know I say it all the time. BUT it is March and the snow is gone- that is so rare in Maine. And today it was 50. And tomorrow it is going to be 60.

Spring/summer is so close- and then I can do all my favorite things!
I can run outside again!
I can go to the farmer's market every Saturday!
I can go to the beach!
I can drink margaritas! (ok lets get serious I didn't stop doing that...)
I can plant my garden!
I can sleep with the windows open and hear the peepers at night and birds in the morning!

This weekend I was talking with a friend about gardening and pretty much have already started planning what I'm going to plant: basil, garlic, cilantro, zucchini, tomatoes, scallions...
I am getting so excited thinking about I am wiggling my toes.
Do you guys do that? Wiggle your toes when you're happy/excited? No? Okay...moving on.

Springy gardenish things from Etsy!

my obsession with air plants/terrariums continues- this is a MAGNET! how cool?!
reclaimed wood, personalized garden planters- perfect for a deck railing
vintage ceramic bird plant markers- love.
not sure how practical- BUT very cool looking!
ceramic & leather hanging planters
nothing to do with gardening- i just like hedgehogs!

i have a cat

Meet Capo.

Capo is a special cat. Like no cat I've ever met before. I rescued her from a local shelter in 2006. She was a tiny cute pink nosed kitten- super curious and playful. And also had runny poo. I used to have to wipe her bum with baby wipes. It was real gross.

runny bum and all, she was still pretty cute. and tough, my boy roommates used to torture her- they wouldn't even call her by her name, and instead, they called her Sweet William. Billy for short.

As she got older, she developed a real 'tude. A real sense of entitlement.

It certainly didn't help that when I lived with Emily she spoiled Capo rotten. She would carry her around, rock her like a baby, let her do whatever she wanted. It really messed with Capo's head. Because after Em moved out, Capo felt like she still deserved that treatment.

If Capo doesn't get a particular brand of food she will find plastic, eat it, then puke on our bed. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.
Or, she will knock stuff off my nightstand.
or chase the dog.

It is not cute.

Capo has also fallen out of a third story window and lived to tell the tale.

and there was that one time she took it upon herself to lick all the hair off of her own "girly bits".

Like I said, she is special. and I just wanted to share her with you.

the end.

etsy monday

this winter has been super mild and I've been spoiled because of it.
we've had hardly any snow, and as February came to a close I was hopeful that the worst was behind us. I had gotten VERY used to the dry winter, being able to wear flats and run outside...
So you can imagine how sad I was when last Thursday we got a foot of snow. Very very sad.
Thankfully, it rained yesterday and melted most of it and apparently this week we are going to have some 60 degree days.
I am so utterly completely ready for spring.

The theme of this week's Etsy Monday!

succulents in re-purposed wine bottles? AMAZE.

I used to love this song when I was little!
